The Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE) opened in 2007 through a gift of $10.5 million from Roger and Joyce Howe. It is housed on the first floor of King Library. The HCWE exists to ensure that Miami students excel as college writers and are prepared to excel as writers in their careers, roles as community and civic leaders, and personal lives. The Center stands as a demonstrated statement of Miami’s strong institution-wide commitment to writing.

Dr. Paul Anderson was the founding director of the HCWE, followed by Dr. Kate Ronald. Dr. Elizabeth Wardle, the current director, took on the role in 2016. Previously, in the mid-1990s, the Howes had given a gift to establish the Howe Professorship in Written Communication in the Farmer School of Business. Over time, the Howe-funded activities in Farmer became informally known as the “Howe Writing Initiative” and more recently as “The Howe Center for Business Writing.” Those activities and the Howe Professor operated separately from the Howe Center for Writing Excellence for their duration. Dr. Kate Ronald was the first to hold the Howe Professorship. Dr. Heidi McKee followed her in that role.

In January 2019, the Howes gave an additional $3 million gift and rewrote their existing gift agreement to consolidate all of their gifts and streamline the administrative work and philosophy of all Howe-funded activities under the umbrella of the Howe Center for Writing Excellence. As a result of these changes, the Director of the HCWE now holds the title of Howe Distinguished Professor of Written Communication, and all activities funded by Howe money are overseen by the person holding those roles.

The HCWE achieves its objectives through writer-facing initiatives (The Howe Writing Center-HWC) and teacher-facing initiatives (the Howe Writing Across the Curriculum programs-HWAC). Per the terms of the most recent Howe agreement, the HCWE has special funds to provide support for Farmer faculty to inculcate writing into their courses and programs.

In the Howe Writing Center, undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff can receive feedback and support on any writing project from trained peer consultants. The HWC, with support from HWAC staff, also seeks to provide innovative writing support outside consulting hours (for example, with writing hours and writing retreats, newly imagined and scaffolded in 2022). Historically, the HCWE had only one director who oversaw all the work. When Dr. Wardle was hired, she negotiated a line for a tenure-track Writing Center Director. Dr. Lizzie Hutton became the first person to fill this role in Fall 2018.

Through the Howe Writing Across the Curriculum program, faculty and graduate teaching assistants can receive ongoing support for developing writing courses, embedding writing in courses across the university, reimagining teaching writing effectively, and designing research projects to study writing. In 2021 we were asked by President Crawford to consider how to reach alumni and others from beyond the university, and we did that through designing and launching the online Miami Writing Institute (MWI). We view the MWI not only as an important online professional development offering for the university but as an extension of our HWAC programming where we can share research and best practices about writing with Miami alumni and a wider public audience. It is a model for future external facing-work.

Finally, the HCWE is a center of scholarship, where we study and enact best practices about writing pedagogy and policy.
