Biographical / Historical
John W. Hall was born on January 19, 1802 in Orange County, North Carolina. Hall studied theology with Dr. Gideon Blackburn and was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of West Tennessee in October 1824. He worked as an evangelist and pastor in Tennessee, then organized a Gallatin, Tennessee, female seminary, serving as its president from 1837 until 1840. After ministering to congregations in Dayton, Ohio, and Hunstville, Alabama, Hall accepted the presidency of Miami University in 1854, remaining there until 1866. He managed to keep Miami fiscally solvent and actually presided over a slight rise in enrollment during a period of national unrest and civil war. Despite his souther roots, Hall opposed to slavery and a Unionist, but his conciliatory attitude to the Confederacy prompted occasional charges of disloyalty. He served as Superintendent of Public Schools in Covington, Kentucky, from 1866 to 1876. John W. Hall died on January 6, 1886.

"In 1845 Stoddard was appointed Professor of Natural Sciences and Vice-President of Miami University. He remained on the faculty for 25 years until 1870, and in 1854 served as Acting President between the terms of Presidents Anderson and Hall. During this time he also served as President of the Board of Trustees of Oxford College for twelve years and represented the Synod of Cincinnati on a commission that established the North Western Theological Seminary in Chicago. A plaque on the inside wall of Stoddard Hall presented by the Class of 1963 (which incorrectly identifies the building as Stoddard House) states: 'This building bears the name of the faculty member called the "little magician" by his students, among them Oxford College girls who came to see the ownders of chemistry and magnetism as he demonstrated them.'
In 1870 when the University of Wooster was founded, Dr. Stoddard was chosen as Professor of Natural Sciences at this Presbyterian institution. He continued to teach at Wooster until his death on Feburary 10, 1892. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta, Alpha Delta Phi, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science."
