Scope and Contents

This collection includes over 375 diaries and essays written by over 350 individual undergraduate students of Preston B. Albright in the Department of History at Miami University between 1951 and 1961. The contents of this collection provide commentary on practically every subject relating to current events and university life during the mid-20th century, with a particular focus on “the life of the average Miami student.” Some diaries and essays were written with complete anonymity and have no date or course number associated.

Biographical / Historical

Preston Bailey Albright was born in Flatbush, NY on March 5, 1907. Albright received a baccalaureate degree in history from Colorado College in 1928 and a Master of Arts degree in educational psychology from the University of Colorado in 1938. Albright also completed graduate courses at Stanford University, the University of Minnesota, and Indiana University, although he never earned a degree from these institutions. From 1933-1935, Albright served as an Instructor of Education at Colorado College. In 1935, Albright became the State Director of the Colorado Historical Records Survey — a position he held until 1937. From 1939-1944, Albright held several positions in higher education, including fraternity counselor at the University of Minnesota and Colorado College, and later a teacher, director, and field representative at Kemper Military School. Preston B. Albright joined Miami University in 1945 as a Freshman Advisor, Instructor of History, and Head of the Freshman Residence. Following an arrest in Cincinnati, OH in 1964, Albright took a nearly two-year leave of absence from Miami University and subsequently resigned on December 28, 1965. Shortly thereafter, Albright joined Vincennes University where he served as Dean of Men and Director of Guidance for two years, from 1965-1967. From 1967 until an unknown date, Albright served as an instructor in the social sciences at Olivet College. Albright is believed to have retired in or around 1973. Preston Bailey Albright passed away in Dufur, OR on November 23, 1998 at the age of 91. Albright never married and had no known children.
