Scope and Contents

The initial 180,000 postcards donated by Clyde N. Bowden in 2009 began as a geographically focused set of postcards with about 110,000 depicting U.S locations and 70,000 international postcards. This collection has grown significantly over time due to addition donations from Allen Bernard and other postcard collectors.

The collections strengths are in the Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky postcards.

Biographical / Historical

Clyde N. Bowden (1930-2020) was a Miami University Alumni class of 1952 and spent his career as a Cincinnati Public Librarian at the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library. He began his postcards collection as a child and the interest continued throughout his life. In the late 1980’s he worked with the King Library to donate the Charles D. Shields Postcard and Trade Card collection to the Walter Havigurst Special Collections and Archives. In 2009 he donated his own collection of postcards, albums, and ephemera. In 2016 recorded an oral history for the Miami University Oral History project. This interview is available in the digital collections.

Other postcard collectors have donated to the collection, including a friend of Clyde’s, Allen Bernard.

Abstract

Collection of an estimate of 250,000 postcards depicting an array of geographic locations. Collection also includes postcard scrabooks, postcard folders and special edition boxes of postcards.

Statement of Arrangement

The arrangement scheme for the bulk of the postcard collection retains the order of the collector. Arrangement changes limited to accommodate oversized postcards which were rehoused in appropriate containers.
